Parent’s Guide to Study Abroad
Finding the Right Fit
Every student is different. The right program balances support and independence.
- Students who need more structure may prefer faculty-led or group-based programs with planned activities and on-site staff.
- Students who are more independent or experienced may thrive in direct-enrollment programs at foreign universities or international internships.
Our Study Abroad team helps students find a program that fits their goals, learning style, and comfort level.

Where Should They Go?
Europe is still a top destination, but students today study on every continent. A program in Asia, Latin America, Africa, or the Middle East can offer unique academic, cultural, and personal opportunities — and sometimes lower costs.
Consider factors like:
- Language and academic focus
- Cost of living and travel
- Safety, health resources, and communication
- Cultural differences and support systems
Study, Intern, or Both?
Most programs are academic, meaning students earn credit toward their degree. Others focus on work experience, language immersion, or hands-on research. Some programs combine both — classroom learning and real-world application.
We offer options for all majors and interests.
Financial Aid & Scholarships
Most students use a combination of financial aid, scholarships, and personal funds to make study abroad possible.
Here's what to know:
- Most federal and state aid applies if the program earns academic credit.
- Your student must file a FAFSA for the correct term and be enrolled in a study abroad course.
- SIU offers the Salukis Abroad Scholarship and other scholarships based on major or merit.
- Many national and provider-based scholarships are available too.
Encourage your student to talk with SIU Financial Aid and a Study Abroad advisor early in the process.

Pre-Departure Planning
Your student will likely have expenses before financial aid is disbursed — things like:
- Application and program deposits
- Passport and visa costs
- Plane tickets
- Housing deposits
- Immunizations or health checks
- Start-up living costs abroad
Short-term loans may be available through SIU Financial Aid if aid is pending.

Billing & Disbursement
- Aid is released about 10 business days before the term starts.
- Students must meet the credit hour minimum for aid to apply.
- Some program costs are paid to SIU, others go directly to the provider — we’ll help your student understand their specific situation.
- Students should set up a Proxy User if a parent/guardian needs to access their billing or aid info.
Veterans Benefits
Veterans or dependents using GI Bill® benefits may be able to apply those funds to study abroad under certain conditions.
Safety Abroad
No program can guarantee total safety — just like on campus. But SIU works only with trusted partners and programs that prioritize:
- On-site staff and emergency contacts
- Collaboration with U.S. consulates and foreign institutions
- Up-to-date safety information from government agencies
We also prepare students with pre-departure info, health/safety training, and guidance on responsible travel choices.
