Important Travel Guidance for International Students & Scholars

Southern Illinois University wants you to travel safely and avoid surprises.

Updated Visa Policies:
The U.S. Department of State and Presidential Proclamation (Dec. 16, 2025) have announced an updated list of countries that will be either fully or partially restricted from travel to the US as of January 1st, 2026.   • If you're from a restricted or partially restricted country:
    • You may travel only if your visa will still be valid when you return.
    • If your visa has expired or will expire before re-entry, do not leave the U.S. Visa renewal abroad may not be possible.
  • If you're from any other country:
    • You may travel even if your visa will expire before returning, as long as it remains valid upon re-entry.
    • Plan ahead: Visa renewal must be done in your home country and could take 3–4 weeks or longer, depending on embassy or consulate capacity.

Before You Travel—International or Domestic:

  • Check your visa: Verify it’s valid upon return, and review the expiration date and entry terms.
  • Bring these documents:
    • Valid Passport and visa
    • I‑20 or DS‑2019 signed for travel (F‑1/J‑1)
    • Most recent I‑94 printout
    • Proof of enrollment for Spring 2026 (unofficial transcript or screenshot)
    • OPT/STEM OPT students or SIU Scholars: employer letter confirming your return date
  • Keep soft copies on your phone and hard copies in your carry-on.
