Southern Illinois University - Mechanical Engineering and Energy Processes

The major for inventors of the future.

SIU Mechanical Engineering Program
Loading...
Mechanical Engineering is the broadest, most fundamental engineering field. Mechanical Engineers use the principles of force, motion and energy to design and analyze machines – machines such as a Stealth Fighter aircraft or an artificial heart, self-driving cars, drones, fuel cells, HVAC systems, robots, nano-machines, and more.

Our students say they feel like they belong to a family within our program. You’ll have a mentor every year who will help you get to know more faculty members, gain more experience, find more opportunities.

Faculty and Facilities

Our Mechanical Engineering faculty come to SIU from major universities across the nation. They will be your teachers, your mentors, and your research guides.

They put their own research in your classroom, giving you practical experience and access to equipment you won’t find just anywhere – labs for thermal management, biomechanics, non-destructive evaluation, tracking by micro-robotics, materials processing for fuel, cells and more.

Graduate Program

Reach your potential. Graduate work in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Energy Processes provides extensive opportunities for graduate students to engage in advanced research and collaborate with faculty and colleagues. Together, our community members push the boundaries of their professions and grow profoundly as engineers, researchers, and innovators.
