At Southern Illinois University, International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) is here to support you every step of the way. As part of the Center for International Education, we work with international students and scholars on F-1 and J-1 visas to help you succeed academically, socially, and culturally. Our team provides clear guidance on immigration regulations, maintains your SEVIS records, and serves as your connection to U.S. government agencies to ensure you have accurate, up-to-date information.
From the moment you arrive, we offer orientation sessions designed to help you adjust, along with one-on-one advising to answer your questions and support your goals. We also host workshops, information sessions, and cultural programs that make it easier to navigate employment and visa requirements, adjust to life in the United States, and connect with the SIU campus and local community.
Resources
Your journey at SIU comes with unique opportunities and responsibilities. Our resources provide the information and support you need, from immigration guidance to cultural programs, to help you thrive.
Students
Your success as an international student is our priority. ISSS helps you prepare before you arrive, from understanding your visa and health insurance requirements to planning housing and travel to Carbondale. Once you are on campus, we guide you through immigration check-in, orientation, and course registration so you can settle in quickly. Throughout your time at SIU, we are here to answer questions, support your academic and cultural adjustment, and connect you with opportunities to get involved, find employment, and thrive in your new community.
Non-students
ISSS also provides support for the people who are part of your experience at SIU. Scholars and interns receive assistance with arrival, immigration status, and health insurance requirements, while dependents can find resources for visas, housing, schools, and healthcare. Faculty, staff, and community members can connect with ISSS for guidance on welcoming international visitors, building partnerships, and engaging with cultural and educational programs. By supporting you and those around you, ISSS works to make SIU a welcoming home for our global community.
Visas
Securing the right visa is an important step in becoming part of the SIU community. ISSS helps you understand the requirements, prepare your application, and stay informed about immigration rules that affect your status. Whether you are applying for an F-1 student visa, a J-1 exchange visa, or supporting documents for your dependents, we connect you with trusted resources and provide guidance at every stage. From your first application through your time in Carbondale, our goal is to make the process clear and manageable so you can focus on your experience at SIU.
